Hmm, it could be too clangy, yea. But what cymbal is it that chambers is using in that clip? I mean it sounds great, is it not an earth ride?

yeah that's an earth ride. Smaller sticks make it less clangy and more pingy. Still too harsh and bright for me though.

Well I use lighter sticks anyway so it would probably be perfect.

In that video clip of Chambers the ride looks to be way too brilliant for an earth ride, which were all unlathed and with a raw/natural "earthy" finish - how can you be sure that's an earth ride?

That's what I was thinking too chris, it doesn't look anything like an earth ride, too shiny. I think it was Da Chooch ( not trying to put him on the spot or anything ) that thought dennis used an earth ride on the buddy rich video so that's what got me thinking it might be. Ok, it is an earth ride. I made a post here >

Edit: woa, I hadn't considered the Z customs. I just had a listen to some soundbites. The 20" Z custom power ride and the 21" megabell ride are awesome and have a bit more wash than the earth. Forget the earth ride then.

I couldn't see the clip, but Dennis used an Earth ride on his two videos, and I assume on the Scofield albums "Blue Matter," "Loud Jazz," and "Pick Hits Live." Mangini was using one the last few times I saw him in clinic and it sounded pretty bad ass for high-energy music...especially the bell.
IMO, one type of cymbal Zildjian is sorely missing from its lineup is something like a thinner (but not too thin) version of the Earth Ride and K Custom Ride...perhaps something like an HHX ride....21" or 22" model that's dark, and yet has depth, body, definition and a formidable bell, but without being clangy.
Zildjian has far too many of variants of the Special Dry Ride and Constantinople idea: dark and sophisticated, but too thin, too washy, and with too wimpy of a bell.
<...end of rant...>

I agree about the too many variants of washy cymbals. What do you reckon to the Z series?

From what I've seen (...er "heard" ) the Z series is darker, thinner, more sophisticated, more playable, and in general just plain better than they were 20 years ago.
The Z-Custom rides probably have a bit more spread than the Earth Ride, but the Z's can sound too brittle or "metallic" to my ears. The Earth may be clangy, but it's at least a darker, more sophisticated kind of clang.
The Z rides are too heavy for what I'm looking for (I'd just get a K-Custom Ride instead), but I think a Z-Custom crash would actually make a good ride: they're about the right thickness, a bit on the darker side, nice combination of definition and wash, and a respectable bell. However, I like a 21" or 22" ride, and the Z crashes at best (I think) only come in 19" and perhaps 20" sizes.
I guess my hang up is that for the sake of putting together a matched "set" of cymbals, it just seems out of whack to have a 22" ride with a smaller, wimpier bell than my 18" A-Custom crash.
It sounds like one of the heavier A-Custom Rides ("ping" or "projection" models) might be just what you're looking for, Rudy...
